Holiday Safety Tips

The holidays can be a special time spent decorating, eating good food, giving gifts, and gathering with family. However, the time from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day can also be a stressful time, with people who might be overcommitted rushing around from place to place trying to get everything accomplished. The last thing your family needs is to add to holiday stress with a serious accidental injury.

Injuries are common during the holidays, and there are several reasons why. It is important to keep your family safe during the holiday season, and the following tips might help.

Stay Aware and Patient on the Roads

Many of us in Montgomery drive around town multiple times trying to get our shopping and holiday preparations finished. However, with everyone in such a hurry, the potential for impatient or even aggressive drivers increases. Parking lots are also often packed, which increases the likelihood of a collision. Even crashes at slower speeds can result in damage and injuries.

Perhaps the most dangerous factor on the roads around the holidays is the increase in drunk driving. The holidays go hand-in-hand with celebrating, and too many people make the unsafe - and illegal - decision to drive home after having too much to drink. Try to avoid being on the road altogether on major holidays and, if you must drive, always remain aware whether other drivers are behaving erratically and might be impaired.

Be Careful Decorating

Decorations are part of the fun of the holidays, and many homeowners take pride in choosing the right yard and light display. However, many people end up falling off ladders or suffering electrical injuries while they are decorating. Always follow ladder safety tips, have someone to help you, and plan ahead so you can avoid injuries whenever possible.

Research Gifts and Supervise Children

Choosing the right gifts for your loved ones is something many of us enjoy. Even the seemingly perfect present can go very wrong, however. A few years ago, people across the U.S. could not wait to give hoverboards to their kids, until people suffered injuries from falling off these boards and the boards started catching on fire in homes as they charged.

If you know what you want to purchase, do some research with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to see if that toy or game has recently been recalled or any defects have been reported. Once you give the gift, be sure to supervise your child the first few times they use it. There is always the chance that the item is defectively designed or assembled, which can result in serious injuries to your child.
